A Year of Savings - scrappy rug

One of my resolutions for 2008 is to use up as much of the random fabric in my stash and turn it into useful items. Our laundry room needed a new rug and this project used up a lot of fabric. I started with a 2 yard length of dark green canvas and used a double layer of it for the base. I drew lines about every 1.5 inches for the sewing guide.

The rows are 4 inch squares of mostly plaids. I ironed them all in half before sewing them. Then I used sewed each row, overlapping the triangles about every inch or so and reversing their direction in the center so there would be fringe on all sides.
The entire project took about 5 hours.
This rug is thick and should really collect lots of dirt off of shoes. Theo likes it too.

  1. Oh, that's really pretty. It's much nicer than something you could have gotten off of the internet. I bought a $15 rubber bottomed laundry room rug on the internet and it's just disappointing. I can't even put it in the washer. Good job!

  2. Thanks for the compliment, Jenny.
I know what you mean about those rubber backed rugs - they don't hold up well at all.
I have plans to make some bathroom mats and a crocheted rug for the backdoor. And I will show them if and when I get them done.

  5. Rhonda - I love your rug but am having a hard time visualing how you sewed them together. You ironed the 4 inch squzre diagonally into a triangle? Then you overlapped them? Am I understanding this right? Very cool rug!

  6. I am very impressed at your resourcefulness! The rug is gorgeous. I would love to make some really pretty stuff with the fabric I already have. I keep going back to get fabric to match what I already have though!
